Through passage of time and movement of life’s currents, I have found the intermingling of identity and place is inescapable. Person and Location infuse one another. Each affecting and becoming part of each. The claim some places hold is immediate and powerful, opening vast echoing gulfs. Others are subtle and beguiling, working their way softly and intimately, only to be realized with a rush and thrill upon reacquaintance long after. This collection of works reflects my experience with a few such places, where knowing them has changed my being, and where some sign of passage may yet be found.
It is a wonderful honor to take part in this invitation only International Exhibition.

ADVANCING A VISION: PAINTINGS AND SKETCHES

There often exists an air of mystery about the life and work of an artist; questions and curiosities about how they create the finished pieces we see bearing their signature on gallery walls and in museums or private collection. Through his exhibition, “Advancing a Vision,” Thomas Caleb Goggans, who is a Chattanooga native and resident of Signal mountain, offers the chance to study the sketches and studies of an artist in which he experiments with the ideas, images, materials, and techniques which fuel inspiration and refine his skill for larger works.
Extending well beyond a mathematical equation of predetermined factors, the pieces in this solo show are artifacts of intense and sustained curiosity. Goggans is deeply intrigued by the expressive qualities found in both the grand changes of color and light as days and seasons progress, as much as he is in small moments of human life, or in the elegance of simple objects like a shed antler or a fading leaf.
Most comfortable being called by his middle name, Caleb is earnest and enthusiastic in his pursuit of the essential aspects of our being and existence. He searches after those things that move us with awe, or beauty, or sorrow- those are axial in his vision.
"Those moments where the knowledge of things, both within and beyond ourselves, settles on us without our bidding, felt and immutable; That is what I am after. I find it in subtle changes of the landscape, or in moments of light falling on ordinary things, or in the profile of a friends face, or in the gesture of body and limb. These paintings and sketches are a record of chasing after those glimpses.”
