" This silvery scene was painted among the pastoral groves and fields of Chattanooga Valley one bright day in late summer. I had taken a group of students out for a day of Plein Air painting, and this location is one I have been to a number of times, as it always affords many wonderful views to choose from.
I had started this painting as a demo earlier in the day, but had moved on to another location, helping students with their paintings. When I returned a few hours later, the light was vastly different and I decided to just pack it in.
After a few weeks had gone by, I was culling though studies in my studio when I cam back across this one, and decided to rework the image from memory. I cropped off several inches and adjusted both the color harmony and value structure of the painting to enhance the strong sense of the backlit landscape in the bright and hazy afternoon light. Looking at this little painting again, I can smell the hot sun on the fields and hear the late cicadas calling from the trees. Just thinking about it makes me want to go wade in the cool stream that runs along the base of the hills just back behind where I stood that day!"
